View Full Price ListWhen Should You Alter a Suit?
There are several common scenarios where professional suit alteration is the smart choice. Weight changes are the most common reason — whether you've lost weight through fitness or gained weight over the years, your existing suits can be adjusted to fit your new body shape.
Another common scenario is purchasing a suit off the rack. Even the best ready-to-wear suits rarely fit perfectly without some adjustment. Sleeve length, trouser length, and waist fit almost always need tweaking. This is why many of our clients combine an off-the-rack purchase with our alteration service.
Inherited or vintage suits are also excellent candidates for alteration. A quality suit from a previous generation, made with superior fabric, can be modernised with updated proportions — slimmer lapels, a more tapered waist, and shorter jacket length.
Suit Alteration vs. New Bespoke Suit
The decision between altering an existing suit and commissioning a new bespoke suit depends on several factors. If your suit is made from quality fabric and the structural elements (shoulders, chest) fit reasonably well, alteration is usually the more cost-effective option.
However, if the suit needs more than 3-4 alterations, or if the shoulders are significantly too wide or too narrow, a new bespoke suit may actually be more economical. Shoulder alteration alone can cost HK$800-1,200, and when combined with other adjustments, the total can approach the cost of a new custom business suit.
Our tailors will always give you honest advice. During your consultation, we'll assess whether alteration or a new suit is the better investment for your specific situation.
Types of Suit Alterations We Handle
Jacket alterations include sleeve shortening/lengthening, waist suppression (taking in the sides), shoulder narrowing, jacket length adjustment, lapel modification, and button repositioning. Each of these requires different techniques and expertise levels.
We also handle trouser alterations including hemming, tapering, waist adjustment, and seat modification. For complete suit alterations, we ensure the jacket and trousers maintain proper proportions after adjustment.
